SimpleList

SimpleList is designed to be a simple and easy way for you to include a list of some kind in your website or blog. I'll admit, this is a little vague! However, the reason for that is because there is a lot you can do with it!

How it works

  1. You enter a list of items in a google spreadsheet
  2. SimpleList fetches this data
  3. CSS on your website makes the list look good!

I have created an example for demonstration purposes. This produces a list of cheeses with an image and more information on each. Each item links to a relevant page for each cheese. All this information is held within a google spreadsheet. See the example in action.

Why would you want to use this?

Why would you bother using an extra step when you could just paste an html list direct into your blog or website? Good question!

  • Sometimes it is easier to edit data from within a google spreadsheet than within your blog or site's content manager.
  • You can perform calculations and fetch information using spreadsheets. The possibilities here are endless - maybe user information is input using Google Forms, or current stock market prices are fetched. This data can be fed to a google spreadsheet, and this list is automatically updated on your website.
  • Collaborative work - perhaps you would like input from a team on one small aspect of your website, but would not like to extend admin privileges to all. You can share a spreadsheet with them, and use this simple code on your website.

To be honest, these are just a few uses that spring to mind. The system is pretty simple and flexible so there must be other use cases!

How do I use this?

SimpleList is, as the name suggests, pretty easy to use. There is just a tiny piece of code to install on your site and setup takes a couple of minutes. Follow these instructions on how to set up SimpleList.
